Gifts for someone who says they want nothing

"Honestly, do not get me anything." Said sincerely, every year, by somebody who then looks slightly disappointed when taken at their word. It is worth working out what is actually being said, because it is rarely a request for nothing.
Four things it usually means
"I do not want more objects." Very common in anyone who has lived in the same place for a while. The house is full. Another decorative thing is a burden, not a present.
"I do not want you to spend money on me." A statement about your finances rather than their preferences, and usually not something they get to decide.
"I cannot face producing a list." The deadline problem. They cannot think of anything on demand, and saying nothing is easier than admitting that. This one is fixable, and it is what a permanent list is for.
"I genuinely want nothing." It does happen. Rare, and you will know, because they say it once and calmly rather than repeatedly.
Three of those four still want a gift. They want a specific kind.
The consumable
Something good that gets used up and then is gone. It does not become clutter, it does not need to be displayed, and there is no obligation to keep it forever. This is the single safest category for someone who does not want more objects, and the trick is to buy a better version of something they already use rather than introducing something new.
The thing they will not buy themselves
Everybody has a category where they knowingly tolerate the cheap version. The taped-up charger. The twelve year old kitchen knife. The thing they say "it still works" about while it visibly does not work.
That is the gap a gift fits into perfectly, because it is not a new obligation, it is a thing they already do, done better. The reason they have not replaced it is never money, it is that replacing it never becomes the most important thing on a given Saturday.
This extends further down than people expect. Some of these annoyances cost almost nothing to end and have still been tolerated for years, which is the whole reason they are still there. Nobody is going to make a special trip for a two dollar part. Attached to something else, it is the bit they actually remember.
The one that is not a purchase
For the person who really does mean it, the answer is usually not an object at all. A specific commitment of time, a job you take off their hands, a meal cooked, an afternoon of something they never get to do. The word specific is doing the work there. "Let me know if you need anything" is not a gift. "I am taking the car in on the eleventh" is.
These are worth writing down alongside everything else. In Gifterz a gift does not have to have a price or a store link, so "a weekend of no chores" can sit on a list next to a physical item and be claimed the same way.
What to avoid
Do not buy something sentimental and unreturnable as a workaround. Engraved, personalised, and impossible to pass on is the highest risk gift there is for exactly this person, because it converts "I do not want more objects" into "I now own an object I am not allowed to get rid of".
Things that land with the no-gifts crowd
- CeraVe moisturizing cream
Unglamorous, fragrance free, and the thing dermatologists point people toward. A safe pick when you know someone has dry skin and nothing else about their routine.
See price at Amazon (Paid Link) - TheraBreath oral rinse
Firmly in the category of things people are glad to have and would never think to ask for. Best as a stocking filler, not a headline gift.
See price at Amazon (Paid Link) - Aquaphor healing ointment
The tub that ends up in every bag and glovebox once someone owns one. Cheap enough to pair with something else.
See price at Amazon (Paid Link) - NOCO Boost Plus GB40 jump starter
A gift someone will forget about for two years and then be extremely grateful for. Good for a new driver or anyone with an older car.
See price at Amazon (Paid Link) - ChomChom roller pet hair remover
No tape, no refills, and it pulls fur off a couch that a lint roller gives up on. An obvious gift for anyone who lives with a shedding animal.
See price at Amazon (Paid Link) - Leviton single gang blank wallplate
Not a gift on its own, and that is rather the point: it is the couple-of-dollars fix for the open box in the hallway that somebody has walked past for six years. Slip it in alongside something else.

If the real problem is that they cannot think of anything on the spot, the fix is a list that runs all year instead of one written under deadline. That guide is here, or read the others.
